Tour Maryland's Crab & Oyster Trail
Did you know Maryland has an official State Crustacean? It’s the blue crab and, in Maryland, crabbing is an important part of our diets as well as our heritage and economy. Our Inn, located on the banks of the Chesapeake & Delaware (C&D) Canal at the top of Chesapeake Bay, is ideally located to Chesapeake City’s best restaurants and an excellent home base to start your tour. Within walking distance of our Inn, you can savor the fruits of the Chesapeake Bay, explore five-star restaurants, seafood markets and some of the best crabs you’ve ever had, served fresh from dock to table.
Right down the street from us on Bohemia Avenue, you’ll find the Bayard House Restaurant. For over 30 years, Bayard has served locals and tourists in their glass enclosed dining rooms overlooking the C&D Canal. On the same street, the Tap Room Crab House serves steamed blue crabs by the bushel as well as Italian specialties. Across the Canal, you’ll find Shaefer’s Canal House, a restaurant, bar and marina. Chesapeake Inn Restaurant & Marina is a bi-level canal-side eatery serving light fare on the deck and an upscale American menu upstairs.
Once you have sampled these wonderful restaurants, you may want to expand your quest and take a driving tour along the Maryland Crab & Oyster Trail of the Upper Eastern Shore. Upon your return to the Inn at the Canal, try our Mini Maryland Crab Cakes with our signature horseradish sauce offered in the Rummer Lounge along with a cocktail.
The Algonquin native Americans called the Chesapeake Bay, Chesepiooc, which has been translated as “great shellfish bay”, "mother of waters” and a village "at a big river."
