Music & Fireworks along the Water in Chesapeake City
Did you know the C&D Canal, which connects the Delaware River with the Chesapeake Bay, is the third busiest canal in the world? A great place to watch the ships come by from all around the world is Pell Gardens. This newly renovated waterfront park is also host to the Summer Sundays Concert Series. Each July and August, the Civic Association presents live music of all genres on Sunday evenings from 6-8 p.m. on the bandshell pavilion. Crowds gather from all over for these free concerts and to partake in food offerings from local restaurants. Be sure to bring a lawn chair or blanket and make an evening of it.
The first Summer Sunday concert of 2021 will be held on July 4, as part of Chesapeake City's Independence Day Celebration. Enjoy an evening of food, music and fireworks along the canal. Festivities begin at Pell Gardens with the kickoff concert. Then as the sky darkens, fireworks will light up over the water. In addition to viewing the impressive display right from Pell Gardens, you can see the spectacular colors light up the sky anywhere along the canal on either the north or south sides of town.
Want to learn more about the canal itself? Then visit the free C&D Canal Museum. Owned and operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this waterfront historic site is located inside the original 18th century pump house that once controlled the water levels in the locks along the first edition of the canal. Learn about past, present and future of the canal through interactive displays, fascinating videos and more.
