History Takes Flight at Massey Air Museum
If you're an airplane buff, no trip to the Eastern Shore of Maryland would be complete without a visit to the Massey Air Museum and Aerodrome. It's a living airport-museum aimed at keeping the spirit of small-town aviation alive. Located just 30 minutes south of the Inn at the Canal, it's a great place to experience the sights, sounds and smells of aviation as it was in its earlier days.
Founded in 2001, the museum and aerodrome were built on rural farmland in what used to be cornfields. Now, there's a 3,000-foot grass strip where you can watch planes and gliders take off and land. The museum includes World War II aviation memorabilia, and there are several historic planes on site for touring up close. Walk through a 1937 Douglas DC-3 airliner and a Russian Antonov An-2 bi-plane, then check out a reproduction of a 1911 Wright brothers glider.
Also part of the museum are two hangars (East Hangar and West Hangar) where you can see numerous antique aircraft from the 1930s to 1960s time period. These are working hangars, containing aircraft that fly as well as some under restoration, and you can watch artisans restoring aircraft in the workshop.
The Massey Air Museum hosts fly-ins throughout the year as well as many special events and open houses. Coming up on December 4, 2022, is the museum's annual Open Hangar Party and Fly-In. Watch the field fill up with more than 100 fly-in guests, take a tour of the museum and hangars, and enjoy food and drinks – all free of charge!
"The exhilaration of flying is too keen, the pleasure too great, for it to be neglected as a sport." — Orville Wright
