Ben Cardin C&D Canal Recreation Trail
Don’t miss out on the transitioning weather this fall when you visit Chesapeake City. To truly enjoy the season, get outdoors in the cool, crisp air of autumn and walk or bike the nearby Ben Cardin C&D Canal Recreational Trail. Fall colors will also soon be on full display and the trail offers scenic and panoramic views of the C&D Canal from the north shore of the waterway. To make enjoyment of the trail easier, you can now rent beach cruiser bicycles right at the Inn at the Canal. Rentals may be arranged through the add-on section of the Inn’s webpage or in person when you arrive at the Inn. Rentals include a round trip ride on the Chesapeake City water ferry that will deliver you to and from the trailhead.
As part of the primary off-road route that links Delaware City and Chesapeake City, the Ben Cardin trail reaches the Maryland Border just 1.8 miles west of the Chesapeake City trailhead. The trail then turns into the 12-mile Michael Castle Trail until it ends in Delaware City. Both trails are within the Canal National Wildlife Refuge and are excellent spots for sightseeing in and among nature and wildlife as well as the famous C&D Canal.
